'Give people the freedom to express themselves,' says England captain Stokes

Ben Stokes reflected on the key pillars of leadership when we filmed with him, Stuart Broad and Josh Denzel

Ben Stokes has guided England to an unassailable 2-0 Test series lead in New Zealand following a comprehensive 323-run victory in Wellington.

So this feels like a good time to revisit one of the most enlightening shoots from our media house work with 4CAST - the athlete collective that Ben co-founded.

During an in-depth conversation with Stuart Broad and Josh Denzel, Ben spoke candidly about the art of captaincy and what he considers to be the key pillars of leadership:

"When you give someone the freedom to just go out and completely express themselves, I think they find out a lot more about themselves as a player and as a person.

"You’ve got to encourage people to find out what they're about, because you might find 10 per cent more out of a player, and 10 per cent more out of a player is massive."

Ben has stuck to those principles, and his England team-mates - not least those who are new to Test cricket - are reaping the benefits.

It's been a joy working with Ben and everyone else at 4CAST. If you'd like to see more from our shoot with Ben, Stuart and Josh, download The Athlete's Voice by 4CAST for free!
